Fashion means Expose: Assamese News Channel

Sometime back, the debate on moral policing stormed the nation when Mumbai police raided hotels and caught couples from hotel rooms. Almost every news channel aired programs where in they discussed ‘right to liberty’ and ‘right to freedom’. Just a few weeks after this incident, a news channel in Assam decided to air a piece on girls wearing shorts in Guwahati. The news story ‘Girls wearing Shorts in Guwahati’ by a local news channel of Assam, Pratidin Times came into highlight in the social media on Wednesday, obviously due to wrong reasons. Embedded below is video of the news piece followed by the English translation of the entire story. Watch the video, look at how the camera is being used, where is it being focused and what the story implies. Focus on the use of language and the use of the word ‘culture’ to defend the lead of the story. Once done, just ask a question, will you allow someone of record you on a tape, without your consent, and then telecast it in the P...

A personal conversation with Olympian Boxer, Shiva Thapa

Amidst all hassles, at one corner of the waiting lounge of Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati sat this young guy with a blue travel back. To an average individual he is just another passenger waiting for his flight, but a true sports enthusiast would identify him as the youngest Indian to win a gold medal at the Asian Confederation Boxing Championship in 2013, the youngest Indian to qualify for London Olympics 2012 and one of the first Indians to get a World Series of Boxing Contract. And he is none other than, our very own Olympian Shiva Thapa. Contrary to his resume which induces the tag of being an Asian Champion and a silver medallist at the 2010 Singapore Youth Olympics, Shiva is probably one humble athlete you will ever come across. He is very soft spoken and well articulated. Hence when this so called sports enthusiast or rather an unknown stranger approached him, he treated me more like a friend than a fan. This is the account of an in...

The Day it Was: October 30, 2008

It was the 7th period of the day. Everything went on as usual. Shouting in the class, throwing of the chalks and cat fights. I was in Class IX, and had just returned from Delhi, after having successfully won the CBSE National Level Science Exhibition. What a happy month that was for me! Everything seemed so fine. All of a sudden there was a boom, the window panes shook. Ignored!! We continued with our work. However, soon we realized something was wrong. The bell for the 7th class rang 20 minutes back and still there was no teacher in the class, and we are absolutely sure about the presence of our teacher in the school premises. Being the best friend of the class monitor, I stepped out of the class. All I could see was teachers assembling in groups and discussing something serious. First thought, someone might have pulled another serious prank in the school. All of a sudden, our Biology ma’am started coming towards me with a serious look. Second thought, what did I do?? ...

The Spirit of the City: Guwahati

This girl molestation incident of Guwahati has brought the city into the lime light of the Nation. Every other people of the country, some of which have never heard the name of the city before are actually busy commenting upon the safety of girls over here and are actually claiming that Guwahati has been the hub of all molestation and rapes of the country. How insane can be that? Let it be very clear, Guwahati is the home of some of the most broad minded people in the country. I can still scream that with proud that unlike Delhi, NCR and Uttar Pradesh , where crimes are committed wide open and people hardly stand up, in Guwahati we had a mass uprising against the culprits and people are actually protesting and making a mark, even after knowing the fact that some of the hooligans have serious political backings. Can anyone in UP or Bihar stand up against the Gundas there? In Assam we do dare to do such. It is also a true fact that compared to the incidents i...
