Confessions of Autowallas

This series was started about a year and a half back, post the horrific December 2012 incident. However, due to the lack of credibility issues and also because of my foolishness of not recording the details of the interviewed Auto drivers led to the rejection of the piece by some major media organizations. I actually asked the auto wallas what they think of rape, public obscenity and sex.  The whole crux of interviewing the Auto drivers of the city happens to be the fact that they travel though out the city and deal with the maximum number of people. Our window into the unknown nightlife of Delhi can only be these auto drivers because they happen to be the only one travelling around the city. Each day they carry passengers and on a personal basis, interact with the vivid experiences. The opinions expressed below are not mine. I just recorded them. At some point they would seem very conservative and stereotyped. But even though I could not establish credibility, none ...

Lets debate 'Rape'

Post December, India has been under an uproar. After the horrific Delhi tragedy, media is filled with reports of heinous crimes committed against women in the country. Be it the play of the media or the need of the hour, today we are being reminded of the pathetic condition of women in this great nation of India almost every day. But the fact remains, what have we done and what has changed? Nothing, I guess. What we discuss in our newsrooms and write in our newspapers gets completely washed away the moment we step into our living room. The onscreen approach and the real life approach to the problems related to women in India stands miles apart. This is a part of the culture that prevails in India. We claim ourselves to be women activists, advocating justice for victims, but we disallow our sons from marrying a raped or molested woman, because she is no longer pure. We are the new age generation, who goes to every possible candle march in the city, cries in front of the ca...

A Talk on Humanity and Society

Humanity, society, responsibility and emotion. At this moment, I want to question, where do we lose them occasionally? Why does it take such a horrific incident, like a rape case to remind us of the fact that we are a part of a civilized society? Why?  The oldest civilization in the planet and yet today we struggle against an act which even animals would abstain from. Yes, strong harsh words, I don’t use them so often. But what is happening around this fog rigged burning city has compelled me to do so? Last seven days, I met, I heard, I saw numerous people, with opinions, anger, frustration and offence, coming out, protesting, shouting in the streets. An Indian born lady, settled abroad commented, I love India, but I now fear being an Indian . Why? Why are we awakened now? We never really bothered when a lady travelling in a bus is bullied and teased. We never stood up to fight for our neighboring lady who is being harassed daily by his landlord. Our humanity remains...

The Spirit of the City: Guwahati

This girl molestation incident of Guwahati has brought the city into the lime light of the Nation. Every other people of the country, some of which have never heard the name of the city before are actually busy commenting upon the safety of girls over here and are actually claiming that Guwahati has been the hub of all molestation and rapes of the country. How insane can be that? Let it be very clear, Guwahati is the home of some of the most broad minded people in the country. I can still scream that with proud that unlike Delhi, NCR and Uttar Pradesh , where crimes are committed wide open and people hardly stand up, in Guwahati we had a mass uprising against the culprits and people are actually protesting and making a mark, even after knowing the fact that some of the hooligans have serious political backings. Can anyone in UP or Bihar stand up against the Gundas there? In Assam we do dare to do such. It is also a true fact that compared to the incidents i...
